Frontend Mentor is amazing. It presents you a series of webpages that you have to replicate. In order to replicate them you can use any tools of your choice (mainly HTML, Javascript and CSS).

Challenges for all levels #

From a cursory look, I would say there are around 100 challenges. They range in level from newbie to guru so there is something for everyone. The easier challenges just focus on HTML and CSS whereas the more advanced ones require lots of Javascript.

The free tier is great for newbies #

Around half of the challenges aimed at new engineers are free. And these aren’t rubbish challenges either. The web pages you have to replicate actually look better than professional products. It’s amazing how some pages can look when you only use the most basic tools. It really hit home to me that sometimes all you need is a good palette. The newbie and junior challenges will get you good at 3 things: spacing, coloring and sizing.

As you go up the ranks you will notice that more challenges are locked behind the premium tier. This makes sense - if you’re an advanced engineer then it’s worth paying a couple of bucks to hone your skill set.

Discord community for premium members #

It is worth mentioning that you can buy access to a community of other front end engineers. They can critique your work or give you advice. To be honest, I never used this feature as I never paid for premium.
